Sunnny, rainy or socked-in, Leura shops and eateries are busy with visitors having fun. Saturday (19.3) was one of those 'you're gonna get it all'. . . A little of everything -- rain, a touch of sunshine and on the distant escarpment a hanging fog. So visitors were prepared. A parade of colourful umbrellas marched up and down The Mall and Megalong Street. Felt like watching a ballet: when the downpour eased, umbrellas closed -- momentarily. Then another downpour and umbrellas quickly opened. It has been a long month of rain and thick overcast, but still the visitors come to lovely Leura.
After a stop at Gifts n Things for a quick browse of lovely scarves on display, we headed up the hill to a favourite eatery -- HANA. Japanese Restaurant. 02 4784 1345 Open Tue-Sat, Lunch 12pm-3pm, Dinner 5:30[m - 9pm.
Hana Japanese is that little gem that locals love and visitors wish they had found. Located at the top of The Mall, just off the Great Western Highway roundabout, the quirky building resembles a 1970s ski lodge where my kids searched under tables for coins dropped by skiers. Today, you will find a crowd here - minus the skis - and empty tables are often rare. For dinner, we recommend bookings.
Today, it is my grandchildren who love the seafood selections and they always check out the 'specials board' for the daily menu changes - the freshest of seafood dictates the menu for Chef Takeshi Shabata. In the tiny kitchen, he creates some unique and authentic Japanese dishes you won't want to overlook. Our best recommendation is Takeshi-san's consistency in the cuisine he offers.
Hana maintains quality and modest pricing. Takeaway is also available. Open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, Hana is a great option for families and is always crowded during school holidays.

Vintage in this decade is the rage and carries so many meanings along with varied styles or looks. Mrs. Peel, much like a museum of the '50s, '60s and '70s, also offers us a modern vintage collection - fine wools for the cooler seasons and snazzy colourful dresses for spring and summer. Here you can cross your vintage styles with multiple colourful options. And, if you want modern - this definitely is the shop. We have friends who travel from The Hills to Leura's Mrs Peel in order to maintain their vintage style. These are serious vintage shoppers and owner Jacquie seems to connect with them.
Sunglasses, jewellery - particularly the colourful bracelets - go so well with chic hats: red or black is trendy again this year. Belts and other accessories are stocked in plentiful supply and are reasonably priced. No matter the season, boots or shoes fly off the shelves of this popular shop but you must drop in frequently - shoes go so quickly.
The atmosphere is casual - we find it easy to browse (and shop) here and the staff is quite attentive.
